Our Journey in Thermal Profiling

Solderstar was established in 2002 to help EMS, ECM and OEM’s move to lead-free soldering before the 2006 deadline.

The key to lead-free was temperature profiling because the available processing window for SMT components was significantly narrowed with the switch to higher processing temperatures.

In addition, miniaturisation of components made them less tolerant of higher temperatures. Components might work on test but fail in the field due to the effects of increased production heating.

Manufacturers, many of whom had made existing products for years, were faced with having to switch their production to lead-free solder paste.

There was a gap in the market for a profiling system which was very simple to use, because smaller companies often had little or no production engineering in-house.

Entering the market

The first Solderstar logger; Neptune4/6 was created to be used with no formal training, with an emphasis on our cutting-edge software paste library. The library could be applied to a captured profile and automatically process parameters.

Evolving to Wave Soldering

Customers loved the Neptune4/6 system, prompting equiries for a similar Wave Soldering solution. We decided that a system for wave soldering would be best if measurement of temperature was by thermocouples and contact with the wave was via switches. So, we developed the Waveshuttle and SL Logger. The SL Logger was revolutionary, replacing outdated thermocouple connections with an electrical connector called SMARTLINK.

Expanding Horizons

With the dual process solution we travelled far and wide, building and supporting distribution and customers. We started to promote the company and its products at European trade shows, eventually moving into the North American and Asian markets.

The Next Stage of Evolution

To support our growing demand we began to develop systems for Vapor Soldering, establishing ties with IBI and later Rehm that continue into present day.

A New Home

In order to keep up with our growing order list and number of staff, we said goodbye to our original office and moved into a new base of operations where we remain to this day.

Innovation through Lockdown

As the world stood still due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we used the time to develop the new Solderstar SLX logger making sure it was 100% backwards compatible with our original SL logger. The measurement capabilities of the SLX has allowed us to develop products targeting a new range of process parameters.

Fine-tuning The Original Designs

As customer needs began to advance into the 2020's our product line also did with the development of the Solderstar Reflowshuttle. The Reflowshuttle had the ability to measure other variables during the reflow process such as vibration, vacuum and oxygen for one-pass, zero-setup reflow soldering.

Today, Solderstar has blossomed into a leading name in Soldering solutions with products spanning multiple continents and hundreds of industries.
